SACRAMENTO, Calif. >> A suspect on the run since a mass taking pictures left six folks dead during an alleged gang dispute in California’s capital city last month has been arrested in Las Vegas, authorities said.
Investigators believe Mtula Payton was one of many alleged gang members who opened hearth in downtown Sacramento on April 3. He was taken into custody at an condo complex, the Sacramento Police Department said in an announcement Saturday evening.
“Las Vegas Metro Police Division worked with our detectives for weeks in an effort to find Payton,” the assertion said.
It wasn’t recognized Sunday if Payton has an legal professional who might converse on his behalf.
Payton and two others, brothers Smiley Martin and Dandrae Martin, had been charged this month with homicide within the slayings, in addition to weapons offenses.
Investigators supplied no motive but said in courtroom documents that Smiley Martin and his companions recorded an internet video hours before the capturing, flashing guns and talking trash from a location in rival gang territory. In it, they state their plans to move to the downtown area with the intent of opening fireplace.
Three men alleged to be gang members and three ladies who had been innocent bystanders died within the shootout that occurred as patrons of bars and nightclubs emptied out onto downtown streets. A dozen more folks have been wounded.
The Martin brothers, who were among the wounded, stay jailed. Attorneys for the brothers have yet to comment on their charging.
Payton, who police say is a member of a rival gang, was being held in a Nevada jail pending transport again to California.
