Nashville Public Library launches ‘Freedom to Read’ campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It is a subject that's taken hold in Tennessee: books like "Maus" or "Walk Two Moons" have been pulled from shelves.

While these books might be banned from some schools, there is still someplace else you can find them.

"Our job is simply to ensure that if you would like it, it is right here for you," said Public Info Officer for the Nashville Public Library, Ed Brown.

"'Maus' is all checked out proper now," said Brown. "So we received more copies on order but as quickly as phrase received around about what happened in McMinn County, we got a whole lot of holds."

These are just some of the two million different supplies on the Nashville Public Library.

"Lots of people don't wish to read these books; they don't want their children to need to read these books, or pressured to learn these books, and that's nice," said Brown. "However there are a lot people who do, and we want to be there for the people who do want to read these supplies."

And if you want to make your love for these supplies recognized, what higher means than with your library card? The 5,000 restricted edition cards for the campaign say "I read banned books."

"All of us watch the TV reveals that we like; all of us watch the totally different sports or root for the completely different teams we're a part of," stated Brown. "Books aren't any completely different."

The aim is to get the 5,000 library playing cards in the hands of recent sign-ups this month.

"We aren't attempting to be a push back — a pressure pushing again against these selections — we need to be an alternative choice to say, for those who could not be capable to get it there... you may get it right here," stated Brown.

The restricted version library playing cards are available as long as supplies final.
