A California district attorney declined to file costs Tuesday against former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson after he was recorded on video in a physical altercation with another passenger on a JetBlue flight.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe made the choice after having reviewed police reviews and movies of the April 20 incident. Both the passenger, who has not been recognized, and Tyson requested that no costs be filed.
"Yesterday afternoon the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office concluded its assessment of the case involving Mike Tyson at the San Francisco Airport on April 20, 2022 and the allegation that he dedicated a misdemeanor battery towards another passenger on an airplane while ready on the terminal previous to departure," Wagstaffe said in a press release.
"Our determination is that we'll not file any prices towards Mr. Tyson based on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. These include the conduct of the sufferer main as much as the incident, the interplay between Mr. Tyson and the sufferer, in addition to the requests of both the victim and Mr. Tyson that no expenses be filed on this case," Wagstaffe said.
The case is now closed.
Cellphone video showed Tyson, 55, appearing to attempt to punch somebody who was pushing him away. Representatives for Tyson said the person was harassing Tyson. The video didn't show what happened earlier than the altercation.
David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Martin Sabelli, attorneys for Tyson, responded to the decision to not file fees by thanking Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County sheriff and legislation enforcement companies "for their cautious, diligent, and professional work."
