Comic Dave Chappelle was attacked onstage Tuesday night as he performed at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl enviornment, with videos from audience members' cellphones shortly flooding social media and showing a person seem to run onto the stage and tackle the comedian.

Chappelle, whose unapologetic humor has made him a lightning rod for criticism, appeared unscathed by the sudden interruption and later joked (Notice: Linked video accommodates harsh language including profanity) with fellow comic and actor Jamie Foxx onstage that he'd taken revenge on his attacker.

Movies posted to Twitter appeared to indicate the person who charged Chappelle being detained outside the venue by police and then loaded into an ambulance with visible accidents.

Witnesses said — and videos appeared to indicate — that the person was set upon by a number of individuals onstage instantly after he attacked Chappelle.

Whereas the whole debacle was captured in a number of movies shot by members of the viewers, cellular phone use was officially banned during the performance.

The motivation for the initial assault remained unclear, and there was no instant response from the Los Angeles Police Division to CBS News' request for details about the incident.

Comedian Chris Rock was on the present, and jokingly requested if the attacker was Will Smith — who made headlines by bounding up on stage and slapping Rock at the Academy Awards in March.

Chappelle drew a pointy rebuke late final year from the transgender community for jokes at their expense featured in his latest Netflix particular, "The Nearer," which premiered in October.

Netflix stood by the Washington D.C. native, continuing to air the particular despite tons of of its own employees staging a walk-out over what they deemed Chappelle's transphobic jokes.

The comedian later said he'd be comfortable to meet with any member of the transgender community, but that he would not be swayed by "anybody's demands" to censor his routine.

"For those who wanna meet with me, I would be greater than prepared to, however I've circumstances: To begin with, you can not come you probably have not watched my particular from beginning to end. You must come to a place of my choosing and a time of my selecting. And thirdly, you have to admit that Hannah Gadsby isn't funny."
