16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful machine supplies and threatening to commit against the law which will end in demise or great bodily harm.

Police stated they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found components to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital objects that could possibly be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"Faculty safety stays a high priority for the department," police said in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case stays beneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the school's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its schools. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and security staff about this investigation and, as is our customary observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we have been assured that this individual didn't pose a right away risk to the Berkeley High School group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion against the scholar. 

In addition, a city hall assembly titled: 'Tips on how to Discuss to Youngsters About College Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
